Let’s Talk About Your Book -- Your Audio Book

By: KL Cooper

Ever thought about making your book available as an Audiobook? If not, you should! It’s easier than you think and can increase your readership significantly. After all, not everyone can read, and not everyone has the time to sit down with a good book. Most importantly, this market is not yet saturated, and since 2012, audiobook sales have increased by 33%.

The Basics

There are a few places you can go to produce an audio book but the place you should start is ACX.com. Audiobook Creation Exchange is the distributor that pushes audiobooks out to Amazon, Audible, and iTunes. There are lots of helpful articles on their website to help you. And you have a few options for getting this accomplished.

Option 1 – Hire a narrator outright

The Upside This requires the lowest time investment, professional quality work, and you can keep more of the royalties. In this scenario, you will audition different narrators and pick one by sending them a short sample. They will send you back the audiobook. You listen to it and proof it. You pay them up front, and you get to keep the book.

The downside This is expensive. A 50k book could be about $1,300. That’s a reasonable rate with 2.5 cents per word representing the industry standard. Shop around. Some are going to me more, some will be less. If you are not a native speaker, you’re going to want to hire a narrator. If you have books that are already successful, this could also be a good option, because the chances are higher that you’ll see a return on your investment. This might also work for newer writers with less inventory if you don’t mind waiting a while to see that return.

To find a narrator you have two options.

1)You can hire ACX.
The simple process is to claim your book from Amazon on ACX. Then submit to have narrators bid on your project.

2)You can go directly to a producer or narrator.
Sometimes, by doing this, you can get more competitive rates. Research can lead you to some good narrators for your genre and possibly better than that 2.5 cents per word rate. I would not recommend fiverr.com, but you could go to other freelance sites to shop around.

Option 2 – Do a royalty-split via ACX

The Upside
There is no out of pocket investment up front.

The Downside
You cut your royalty rates in half, and you CANNOT distribute outside of ACX, which also means, you can’t give your audiobook away in a promotion like an email opt-in or as a bonus. You might be able to do a few free coupons through audible, but that’s it.
Also, your book must be selected by a narrator. So, you don’t get free pick of who does the narrating. But just as in the first option, the narrator handles the audio editing, which is helpful.

You will lose more in the long run, potentially, with this approach, and you will be locked into a contract with ACX.

This is only a good option if you have no budget and if you don’t speak English natively. Apply this advice to whatever native language your book is written in, of course.

Option 3 – Record them yourself

The Upside
You can save a lot of money this way, and you’ll have full control of the rights and distribution. This method is also quicker, reducing your production time from weeks to possibly days. The biggest reason you might want to do this, not just the money and the speed of implementation, is to create a deeper connection with your audience. ACX encourages authors to narrate their own books. This is especially true with non-fiction or memoirs. But this works with fiction, too. You’ll be able to offer it as a bonus or for sale on your own website.

Recording your own audiobook is a form of proofreading! How many of you read your book aloud before or after you send it to an editor? It’s a great way to catch spelling mistakes, awkward wordings, and bad dialogue. You can also catch things an editor might miss. Since you’re probably going through this proofreading process anyway, why not get the audio done at the same time?

The Downside
I know that many of you would rather jump into a hot river of snot than record your own Audiobook, but if you do decide to do this, you’ll need to learn a few skills and buy a few pieces of equipment.

It will take some time to record it yourself at a ratio of 3:1 – 1 hour of audiobook takes about 3 hours of production time. Hiring out audio book production is usually $350 per finished hour. You can definitely go higher than that with an in-demand narrator.

What You’ll Need

Microphone – I recommend the Audio Technica ATR2100- $79 (this one comes with a pop filter) or Samson Q2U $59 (comes with headphones)-  You don’t want a terribly GOOD one, because those pick up more noise than is needed or wanted for audiobook recording. These do a great job of blocking out the sound that is not coming from right in front of the mic.

Pop Filter - $7
Microphone stand - $10 for a Neewer desk stand
Monitor Headphones - $24 if you already have some good ones, you can use those
Music Stand (optional) - $15 if you prefer to read from sheets of paper
Blanket, pillows, thick clothes from around the house

Studio Set-up Tips

Record in a small room. Don’t use a bathroom because they are reflective and will echo the sound back.

Hang clothes on a rack behind you, or take a patio umbrella and hang blankets over the top of it. Orient the mic away from noise sources.

Final Note

There are other ways to get an audio book made, but since this is a blog post, I wanted to keep the topic short and relevant to ACX. If there is interest, I could do a part 2 that covers other options another time, or cover the process of making your own recording in further depth. Just let me know in the comments section. I hope you got something useful out of this information.

Launching a book tour? Welcome to the Jungle

By: KL Cooper, Social Media Director for PPW

Well, Amazon DOES have fun and games, and it can surely bring you to your knees… with frustration. AM-A-ZON… (Insert dramatic music here) Practically every published author knows that word and all the negative connotations that go along with it. Often treated with disdain, most authors neither understand this mysterious digital jungle nor do they care to. Did they remove a perfectly good review simply because their spies suspected you KNOW the reviewer? Did your book fail to launch like a rocket after all those pre-orders? I’ve heard many more grumblings about this daunting book seller in the not-so-hallowed halls of social media. It’s easy to become mired in mud and lost under the canopy. Do not despair, dear author, for I bring good news! And machetes. Let’s unpack these suckers and start clearing a path to success.

WHACK! IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!

Yes. Yes, it is. If Amazon doesn’t crack down on abusive sellers who bend the rules by getting their friends or paid services to put up favorable reviews for their book of questionable quality, then Amazon, in turn, will stop making money, and so will you. As the world’s largest retailer of e-books and e-book readers, that’s not a good thing for Amazon or for you. So yes, you may have had a review or two removed, but you have to understand how many books they are trying to quality control on a daily basis to keep their credibility. The reason for keeping reviews honest is so that potential buyers can have confidence in that five-star rating. The solution? It’s got two parts. 1) Get more reviews. (That’s a whole other topic—so, let me know in the comments if you’d like me to talk about that in the future or expound on any other points here, because I’m just skipping stones off the surface of a very expansive lake—yes, this jungle has a lake.) 2) Do not simply copy and paste the URL for your book’s Amazon page to solicit reviews from your friends and family. Amazon uses that to track where the review came from.

WHACK! AMAZON IS NOT A BOOKSTORE!

Amazon is a search engine. Just like Google, your Amazon success has more to do with how you position your book with relevant keywords than it does with how many times you tweeted about it or asked all your Facebook friends to buy it. If you want your webpage to show up at the top of a Google search, you have to know a thing or two about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or hire someone who does. The same goes for Amazon. Make sure your book is in the right category and sub-category listing. Then, use targeted keywords in your book blurb to attract Amazon’s search party. This is not the ONLY way to get your book on that coveted first page of search results, but it’s a good start. A super easy way to get those keywords is to search books in your genre and see what appears in the first twenty listings. Check out their copy and see what words they have in common. Also, when you start to fill out the search box, Amazon makes suggestions, much like Google does. Pay attention. Those suggestions are NOT random.

WHACK! AMAZON CAN BE TAMED!

Amazon uses a fairly simple algorithm to determine sales rank. This could change at any moment, but for now, this is how it works. Did you know that Amazon ranking favors long-term sales over short-term spikes? Each sale or download counts for 1 point toward that day’s “score.” The tally of today’s points are added to half of yesterday’s score, and so on. This means that dips in your ranking that may seem arbitrary could actually be due to the long term performance of competing books. So, what about that awesome promotion you just ran that sold 500 copies in a few days? The ranking effect of a sales spike will quickly fade as the promotion ends and your book sales drop back down to “normal” numbers. That other book that only sold 150 copies will outrank you again after a week or two, because their “normal” numbers, which are usually above yours, remained steady (Again, please let me know if you’d like to hear more about that in a future post.) But the take-away here is this: don’t fret if your book launch doesn’t spike your initial ranking (Amazon counted your pre-orders on the days they were made). Or, if your promotion didn’t result in a longer run at the top. That’s actually a good thing. Slow and steady progress will get you through the jungle more effectively than setting fire to the underbrush.

WHACK! AMAZON CAN BE TRAINED!

I’d like to tip my pith helmet to Chris Fox (a YouTuber and writer) for this next section. Be careful who you push your book to when you launch it. Amazon needs to “learn” who your book appeals to so it can recommend it in the “readers also bought” section of their product pages. Asking all your friends and family to rally and buy your book may seem like a great strategy, but you could be killing your book’s long term success as cook books and romances show your military sci-fi book as an “also bought” recommendation. It’s better to target your book sales to the kinds of readers who would buy your book organically. Meaning, they didn’t buy it simply out of pity or to show support. If targeted readers buy your book, then Amazon knows who to market it to and will largely do the work for you! You can watch Chris Fox’s video on this here à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOxi8GhPWBE

WHACK! AMAZON IS NOT PERFECT!

Not perfect? Surprised? Probably not. Despite its flaws, Amazon was, and continues to be, a game changer. There are few places independent authors can sell their books to such a large audience. Amazon is challenging to be sure, but it’s worth taking a whack at. Just be sure to bring the “write” tools for the job.

This epic fantasy (ISBN 978-0451417268, 496 pages) was released December 1, 2015 by Penguin Random House/Roc Books and is available everywhere including Amazon and Audible.com

Lucian de Remeni's life has been irredeemably transformed since his portraits began to show things he couldn't possibly know.  His family is dead.  His own people accuse him of madness. Beings of legend insist his magic breaks the world that is already reeling from a bloody civil war. Lucian's pursuit of answers leads him to a secretive, violent military Order, a soulless mentor who steals his memory, and along a trail of corruption through the depths of history and beyond the boundaries of the world.

Carol Berg’s fifteen epic fantasy novels have won the Prism Award, the Geffen Award, and multiple Colorado Book Awards.  Her duology, Flesh and Spirit and Breath and Bone, won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature, and she is a regular panelist/presenter at writers conferences and science fiction conventions.  All amazing for one who majored in math and computer science to avoid writing papers.  Her latest novel, Ash and Silver, is out from Penguin Random House in December 2015.   She calls writing “the hobby that ate my life.”

When most women go through a mid-life crisis, they start a diet, get plastic surgery, or have an affair. My life went to the dogs…and horses…and llamas… and did I mention happy hour with the goats?

My urban world came apart, so I took a leap of faith and crash-landed on a dilapidated would-be horse farm on the flat, windy, treeless prairie of Colorado. It’s the story of my bittersweet transition from a mid-life orphan to a modern pioneer woman, building an entirely different kind of family farm--Jeanette Walls meets James Herriot.

Anna Blake was born in Cavalier County, North Dakota, in 1954. She is a writer/blogger, dressage trainer, and horse advocate, residing on Infinity Farm on the flat, windy, treeless prairie of Colorado. The herd also includes horses, llamas, goats, dogs, cats, and Edgar Rice Burro.

The book is available at Amazon, Smashwords, and other online retailers. Visit http://www.wolfsingerpubs.com/Dolmen.html for more information.

The Dolmen is a mix of old-fashioned horror and police procedural that begins with the illegal importation of an entire megalithic tomb from Britain for a private Los Angeles museum. He is the lead author of the NASA-published history The First Space Race: Launching the World’s First Satellites (2004). Under Pressure? All You Need is a Plan and a Process

(Editor's Note: This first Monday is generally slotted for the Letter from the Editor, but this month I am deferring to this timely post and its good advice for all things November. As a secondary benefit, it frees up a little time for your editor to log her 1667 daily NaNoWriMo words.)

By Donnell Ann Bell

"Pressure is something you feel when you don't know what the hell you're doing."  Peyton Manning

I love this statement by Peyton Manning. Mainly because Manning is one of those rare individuals who prepares and studies so much he’s always ready. Therefore, he has every right to make this claim.

Me? Not so much. Oftentimes, I’m so wrapped up on all those things I’m supposed to be doing, that I end up doing next to nothing. I have a book release coming November 7th. I’m supposed to be promoting. I have a book due next year. I’m supposed to be writing. People are talking about NaNoWriMo – I should be joining. And don’t look now, but Thanksgiving is just around the corner, I have company coming, and as I type this, there are 60 days until Christmas.

Sing along with Bon Jovi and me … Under Pressure.
www.thesocialmediamonthly.com

I submit that of much of the pressure I’m feeling is self-imposed. Perhaps it’s because I haven’t developed a full understanding on how to accomplish it. No doubt about it, the upcoming months are the busiest times of the year. And even though the days seem to fly by, I have to remember there are 24-hours in a day.

NaNoWriMo is a wonderful opportunity to cast things aside and advance your works in progress. For the record, I was teasing about “should be joining.” I don’t do NaNo. I write junk when I do. But my friend, USA Today bestselling author Dale Mayer, writes an entire book during NaNo (and so do a lot of other people). It works for her. She knows her process.

My process when I write is to complete the first draft in shorthand, then transcribe, and finally I sit down at a keyboard. This may sound laborious, and it is. But something clicks in my brain when I write a novel this way, and by the time I get to the computer, I’m on a third draft of a book. It’s my process.

To develop that goal, however, I must first pave the way. So before I go to bed tonight, I’m going to make a list of those things I need to get done. When I’m truly organized--it has happened--I make a list. I post it on my computer screen. That way when I’m tempted to get on Facebook and play, that list is staring me in the face. Second, next to me as I type this are three empty notebooks along with my character outline.

Let’s get real. I will never, ever in my wildest dreams, be as prepared as Peyton Manning. But he offers such wise advice, don’t you think? So the first thing I’m going to do is turn in this blog and study the rest of my to-do list. I’ll allocate time for promotion, which I really don’t enjoy, and reward myself with the thing I love, and that’s creating.

Funny, the pressure I felt when I sat down to write this article has lessened. Maybe it’s because I’ve developed a plan, and in the words of Peyton Manning, I know what the hell I’m doing.

The Importance of Catchy Titles

By Karen Albright Lin

A catchy title has always been an important part of marketing a book. It’s no less true now that e-books are taking over the world. It ranks up there with cover art and your blurb. As your potential buyer scrolls across relevant titles, yours needs to grab their attention NOW!
www.tckpublishing.com

Your title should reflect the genre and flavor of your book. If it’s snarky, let the title reflect cynicism and irreverence. If you write ironic, make that clear with your title. If your book is dry, rewrite the book.

Short, simple titles are easier to remember and tend to rank higher in sales. But a good long title is still far better than a crappy short title. That being said, I find lengthy, abstract titles irritating because I can’t remember them. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet starred in the surreal Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I tend to remember the “Spotless Mind” part of the title, but I have to look the movie up on IMDB whenever I want to refer to it properly. I’ll channel Eeyore here; if they’d asked me, and nobody did, I would have suggested they stick with “Spotless Mind". As is true with all elements of writing, from plot down to the structure of a sentence, the first thing that comes to mind is often not the best. Brainstorm and shoot a few ideas past your friends.

Some titles mean something different by the end of the movie. Some have double meanings, one figurative, one literal. Challenge yourself to find a title that works on several levels. An example is Sophie’s Choice. The title refers to the gut-wrenching choice forced upon her—which of her children to save—but also her choice to survive the Holocaust through an unsavory relationship with a Nazi. And it works for her present-day story, her choice to stay with an emotionally abusive man.

You can even make up a new word for your title. Butterology. We can guess what that book would be about. Since I love butter, I could get behind such a book. Lulu has a fun title scorer. Statisticians analyzed the titles of NY Times #1 bestsellers. Lulu’s algorithm judges your title based on how many words, what parts of speech, literal or figurative, whether it includes a name, etc. It will suggest to you what percentage chance your book has of being a bestseller. Of course, this is just for fun, but it will make you think about the importance of titles. Go to http://www.lulu.com/titlescorer/

Nonfiction is often easier. These titles tend to be straightforward. Two considerations are most important. Along with the promise of entertainment, a nonfiction title needs to suggest how the book will benefit the reader. Its subtitle usually qualifies the title’s promise. If I knew how to design hats, I might write Top it Off: The Lost Art of Designing Hats. Think catchy and clear.

It’s obvious for nonfiction. But with fiction, too, you’ll want to make it easily found with search engines, not only for online sales sites like amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com, but for general search engines like Google or Bing.  Be sure the title contains the most obvious words your reader would use in a search. If you write bibliomysteries, consider having a subtitle that reads "A Bibliomystery by XXX".  A fitting title is only one piece of Search Engine Optimization, but I’d argue that it’s the most important. If you decide to dig in deeper about how to get your book seen online, you can read one of the many tomes on SEO. On a quick search, the ones that caught my attention are those with “Secret” in their names. Apply their wisdom to your own title.

If you are going traditional, your publisher may insist on using a different title. Gripe into your pillow. Their publicity people have years of experience behind their suggestion and you would be wise to follow their lead. They could be appealing to an audience with more disposable income or making it more edgy to capture younger readers. They might have had a bad experience with a title that was a little too close to yours. They may need something that will complement the cover art they have in mind. That too may not be to your liking, but typically you don’t have much input on that. Allow the experts to help; they have every reason to do what is right for your book sales.

Browse through a brick and mortar or online bookstore and see which titles draw your attention and why. Remember the title you have in your head as you write may be an inspiration for your opus and the greatest marketing tool. It may also act as a placeholder, changing later. Find the best title you can and be open to discussion if asked to change it by those who have more experience than you. Most importantly, have fun with it!

Anyone who has known the loss of a loved one can relate to this story. This nonfiction book chronicles Ronnie’s grief and thoughts on life and God during the days leading up to, and for the year following the death of his wife, Merry, from pancreatic cancer. It captures the raw emotion of a man as he seeks to rebuild his wrecked life. It follows one rule in its telling: it must be honest from the start. That honesty comes through in every paragraph and makes this a very personal, well-told story.

About the Author:  Ronnie is a retired army officer and former government civilian. He has lived in Colorado Springs for over ten years and very much enjoys all of the outdoor sports the area has to offer.
