Orwell is the pen name for Eric Arthur Blair (June 25, 1903-Jan. 21, 1950) He was an English novelist, essayist,
journalist, and critic. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social
injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism. He
is perhaps best known for Nineteen Eighty-Four,
often published as 1984, a dystopian novel published in 1949.
